In the Medieval world, European peoples maintained mutual relations as the unity experienced in the Roman age dissolved. Sometimes determined by conflicts, or favoured by peaceful bonds of monastic life and the ecclesiastical world, from the travel of merchants and pilgrims to the Holy Land.
Human thought, in ways which are nowadays barely identifiable, knew and cultivated vast and lasting contacts in space and time, the memory of which lives on in our present day. This was the case for spiritual life, which in clandestine fashion and against the Authority and official Church, helped spread certain heretic movements from one end of the continent to the other.
This is the case of the Bogomils from Bulgaria and the Cathars from northern Italy and from Occitania, whose principles were inspired by an original Christianity, spreading from Balkan Europe to western Europe.
"The journey of ideas" will be the key to the documentary film BOGRE - the journey of Bogomils and Cathars in the Middle Ages.
Not just to discuss the Cathars and Bogomils from a religious-doctrinal point of view, by detecting the affinities, or the subversive meaning they had on the social and political context of their time; not only for being persecuted, cruelly fought, exterminated and forgotten. The fascination their story still transmits today lies in the power of a spiritual idea which was able to create and migrate, right in the middle of the Middle Ages, in a non dogmatic form, contacts, ties, reciprocal influences between peoples and countries: between theOrient and Byzantium, between Byzantium and the Balkan peoples, between the Balkan peoples and western Europe.
BOGRE, in Occitan, means Bulgarian.
BOGRE is one of the names given to the Cathars.
BOGRE today lives on in Occitan countries as an insult.
BOGRE: and the journey of Bogomils and Cathars in the Middle Ages.
BOGRE is the title of the film we are going to make.
BOGRE is a film by Fredo Valla made with Andrea Fantino and Elia Lombardo.
